This year, our crystal ball gets a notebook. Rather than leaving you with “big changes ahead”, we write down our bets and keep the measuring stick beside them. Five main predictions start with current affairs. Then we turn up the imagination with three wild ideas about everyday life. Pick your favourite and come back at the end of 2027 to hold us to it.
1. Superintelligent AI in 2027: a new colleague for humanity?
Our 2027 prediction
By the end of 2027, at least two publicly available AI assistants will offer a task involving several steps, with approval required before payment or final submission.
Factual background

Why we think this
Moving from words to actions interests us more than another exam score. The limitations in the AI Safety Report make supervision important: an assistant that lets you check its work may become useful sooner than one expected to handle everything alone.

Watch real users preparing an appointment, checking details and approving the next step. Recovering from a mistake tells us more than a polished sales demonstration.
2. Russia and Ukraine in 2027: room for a first bridge?
Our 2027 prediction
Our Russia–Ukraine scenario: at least one new, mutually confirmed prisoner exchange takes place in 2027. That would not, by itself, mean the war is ending.
Factual background

Why we think this
A limited agreement needs less common ground than a peace treaty. We therefore focus our crystal ball on something tangible for families. This is our editorial judgement; the UN reporting does not establish that negotiations will succeed.
What should you watch?
Look for confirmed returns and statements from both sides. An invitation to talks is not an implemented agreement.
3. Will Trump still be president in 2027?
Our 2027 prediction
We expect Donald Trump still to be US president on December 31, 2027. This is our most conservative prediction: the normal presidential term continues into January 2029.
Factual background

Why we think this
A calendar is more useful than a crystal ball here. No regular presidential handover is scheduled for 2027. Unexpected developments could change that expectation; we are not inventing a forecast about his health or an early departure.
What should you watch?
Check who actually holds office. Approval ratings and political disagreements do not themselves change the presidential term.
4. Iran in 2027: hope for breathing space
Our 2027 prediction
Our hopeful scenario: at least one new negotiating round takes place in 2027 between Iran and the US, directly or through mediators, concerning nuclear arrangements or de-escalation, with confirmation from both sides.
Factual background

Why we think this
The risk of further escalation gives parties a reason to seek contact even while distrust remains. A reason to talk is not evidence that talks will happen. We therefore make a limited prediction about a meeting, not a peace agreement.
What should you watch?
Who attended, what was discussed and do both delegations confirm the meeting? A proposal in a speech is not a negotiating round.
5. El Niño effects in 2027: getting ahead of unpredictable weather
Our 2027 prediction
We expect an official WMO or NOAA update to confirm El Niño for at least one period in January through March 2027. That does not predict a particular summer for your town.
Factual background
The WMO’s September 2026 update expects El Niño to persist into at least early 2027, increasing extreme-weather risks. Regional forecasts are still needed to assess local impacts. WMO: El Niño and extreme weather into 2027.
Why we think this
This expectation has a meteorological starting point: the cited WMO update already looks ahead into early 2027. We choose to follow that limited horizon. Predicting a local heatwave much further ahead would imply more certainty than the source provides.
What should you watch?
Follow official ENSO updates and regional forecasts. The hopeful part is preparation: planning shade, storing water or adjusting a farming decision when local information supports it.
Three wild predictions: let the crystal ball dream
These three extra predictions are deliberately playful speculation, without an evidence-based probability estimate. We still set the rules beforehand. That should make our flights of imagination more fun to revisit.
A laundry robot becomes a real gift idea.
Our wild bet: by late 2027, a household robot that picks individual garments from a basket and folds them can be delivered for under €3,000. Finally, a housemate who actually enjoys laundry.

Anyone can promise to book a weekend away. Our wild prediction is more useful: in 2027, one consumer assistant also demonstrably secures a refund after a cancellation. This digital travel companion stays at the table when the plan goes wrong.

Eight predictions, no results yet. These concrete criteria were recorded on 10-01-2026 and apply to events in 2027. Reviews will include evidence links and an explanation. Correct means the full criterion was met; partly correct requires an account of what was missing. Without enough evidence, a prediction remains unassessed. A missed deadline counts as wrong once that can be verified. The final review is planned for January 2028 so the last days of 2027 can also be included.
